Sutherland

I’m Roman Sutherland, a philosopher interested in how we come to understand ourselves. My work examines the habits and beliefs we rely on, the responses we overlook, and what changes under pressure. Through Nousophy, I’m developing ways to examine those patterns in everyday life.

How I test
an explanation.
I use philosophy to examine the question and psychology to investigate what may be producing a response. I compare the explanation with experience to see how well it holds.
A personal method
Examining my
own responses.
- 01
Notice what repeats
I began by noticing reactions, assumptions and avoidance that had become automatic. What often felt like personality was learned behaviour repeating without examination.
- 02
Observe before correcting
Before trying to change a response, I watched what triggered it, how my emotions shifted and the reasons I used to defend it.
- 03
Trace the connections
I looked at how beliefs influenced emotion, how emotion led to action, and how actions affected my sense of self. These connections helped me understand responses that had seemed chaotic.
- 04
Consider what I had excluded
My next task was to understand the responses I had been unaware of and consider them consciously when deciding how to act.
